I often get asked by clients if it is safe to travel to Mexico. Mexico seems to always be in the news at least once a year for unfavorable events that happen to travelers. As a result, this creates a sense of fear in some travelers about traveling to the country.
Some may say that I’m biased as a professional in the travel industry. However, I can objectively say that no destination is 100% safe. That includes our own local cities here in the United States. In fact, there are some cities in the United States that can closely compete with Mexico on crime rates.
A discussion that is not talked about enough is the lack of precaution and awareness that some travelers tend to have when they’re on vacation. Sure, we all want to relax and unplug on vacation but you have to remember to pack your common sense! While we vacation to get away you should definitely exercise the same precautions that you would have when you travel anywhere or in your own backyard. If more travelers did this, I do think some of the unfavorable events could be avoided.
At the end of the day, you have to travel where you feel safe. Traveling to a place that causes you anxiety is a recipe for having a bad vacation experience. If you do not feel comfortable traveling to Mexico (or other destinations) don’t push it! Simply choose another destination. One thing to keep in mind however is that the more secluded and exclusive the destination is, the higher the price may be. Therefore, if you want to cross Mexico off of your list of options, remember to have a budget that aligns with your preferred vacation destinations.
